Letter from the Editor Issue 1

Letter from the Editor

Dear Reader,

It happened. We did it. We made a literary magazine filled entirely with scripts. Only scripts.

This magazine was born out of a desire to have a place where scripts feel they belong in the literary world. Having worked as a drama editor on the campus literary magazine during my undergrad years, I appreciated the experience, but I noticed we drama editors had to fight especially hard in order to vouch for drama pieces to even be included. Yes, it’s true we didn’t necessarily have the submission numbers of other genres, but that didn’t mean that scripts had no place in the magazine.

As a playwright myself, there is some sort of stigma in the literary world about scripts. “They’re not exactly literary because they’re meant to be performed or filmed.” Fine, yes, that is somewhat true, but I still firmly believe scriptwriters deserve the same recognition and opportunities in publication that many poets and prose writers have. Scriptwriters deserve a platform where their work can be read. With some scripts, I hope that we can be a step in the careers of both emerging and established—but especially emerging—scriptwriters in their pursuits for performance, a film/TV project, or further publication. The goal of some scripts isn’t just to be a magazine: we are looking to grow a more connected community of people who write plays, screenplays, monologues, sketches, etc. We want to be an entity that supports you.

This magazine was designed in the mindset of reading a script for the first time in its extreme simplicity of font and structure. And as Randi Proescholdt, a member of our reading team, best described the reason behind our front cover image:

It’s the most representative of what we’re about–the way he’s reading is evocative of theatre, but the black and white is evocative of film. Since we’re publishing both stage plays and screenplays, I think it’s a great fit!”

It also can’t go unnoticed that this entire magazine was made with the help of volunteers I feel honored to call my colleagues in scriptwriting and artistic endeavors. So, without further ado, please enjoy and spread the word about the inaugural issue of some scripts!

With love (and some scripts),

Alyssa Cokinis
